30 - The Bison football squad won their last regular
season match of the 2004 season, 41-36 over the SFU Clan. The team
however, was eliminated from the Canada West playoffs after Calgary
upset UBC 26-17 to clinch fourth place.
A
crowd of 550 saw almost 1,200 yards in offense for the two teams
and had both quarterbacks throw for almost 900 yards combined.
The
back-and-forth game started slow with a 3-3 score after the first
quarter.
The
teams produced four touchdowns (two each) in the second quarter.
SFU Clan Brendan Mahoney grabbed two TDs of 22 and 27 yards while
Bison Blair
Atkinson matched him with a 50 yarder and 26 yard TD catches
to make the score 19-17 at the half.
In
the second half, Atkinson hauled in his third touchdown of the game
while SFU countered with a 29 yard pass to Brent Cowden. After three,
Manitoba 27-24.
In
the fourth, the Bisons had two touchdown drives within a two minute
span to take a 14 point lead with 3:28 left in the game. A.J.
Zeglen scored his fifth TD of the season on a 16 yard pass while
Bison quarterback Ryan
Zahara plunged in from one yard. SFU made it close with a safety
and a last second run by starting quarterback J.R. Davies but fell
short and the Bisons prevailed for a 41-36 win.
For SFU, J.R. Davies went 27-44 for 495 yards and 3 TD. Mahoney
had nine catches for 156 yards and 2 TDs, Cowden had seven catches
for 94 yards and 1 TD and Jesse Costello had five receptions for
135 yards. SFU had 605 total yards.
Starting
QB Ryan Zahra led the Bisons by throwing for 390 yards (third most
by a Bison in a game) on 16-30 with 4 TDs and one rushing TD. Darwin
Thompson rumbled for 163 yards on the ground on 27 carries.
Steve
Gronick had eight catches for 181 yards and Atkinson had four
receptions for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Manitoba had 539
total yards.
