October
13 - On Saturday afternoon at University Stadium, the #3 ranked
Manitoba Bisons football used defence, a timely touchdown and a
broken special teams play to secure a 26-14 win over the UBC Thunderbirds.
With
the victory, the Bisons run their consecutive regular season win
streak to 15 games (spanning from 2005-07) – the longest in
the CIS right now - and remain in first place in the Canada West
conference with a 6-0 record.
“It
was a tough game. We showed a lot by digging deep in the fourth
game and staying composed after UBC scored and captured the momentum,
“ stated Bison football head coach Brian
Dobie.
The
game did not showcase offence as both teams were solid on the defensive
end and prevented any long plays. The game remained in a tight 9-8
score after three quarters before fireworks erupted at the halfway
mark of the fourth. UBC capitalized on a botched punt by the Bisons
deep in their territory and marched 30 yards for a 14-9 lead after
a missed two-point conversion.
The
score seemed to awaken the Bisons offence and the home side proceeded
to march 80 yards on seven plays and capped the drive with a 26
yard TD pass to Jeff
Strome.
After
a Bison FG, the Thunderbirds were desperate for the ball with 1:30
left on the clock. They forced Manitoba punter Jake
Kennerd (Winnipeg, MB) out of his kick and he improvised by
kicking while on the run and instead of great field position for
UBC at midfield, the ball careened out of bounds on the UBC 16 yard
line. On the ensuing play, UBC quarterback Marc McVeigh (Langley,
BC) was intercepted by linebacker Kenton
Onofrychuk (Winnipeg, MB). Onofrychuk returned the ball 30 yards
for the final touchdown and lifted any suspense left in the game.
For
Manitoba, QB John
Makie was 23-32 passes for 264 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT. The
defence was led by Mike
Howard with seven tackles and one breakup and Brady
Browne with six tackles and two breakups.
UBC
QB Marc McVeigh was 22-42 for 222 yards and 3 INTs and ran six times
for 51 yards and 1 TD. Linebacker Shea Emry had eight tackles (one
for a loss) and CJ Stephenson, Tyler Codron and Nathan Kanya had
seven tackles each.
Manitoba
(6-0) host Regina (5-1) on Saturday, October 20 at 1 p.m. CT while
UBC (3-4) has the conference bye.
