Manitoba Drop Rams for 16th Consecutive Regular Season Win
Tie team record set from 1968-70
On Saturday, October 20 at University Stadium, the #3 ranked Manitoba Bisons football and #7 ranked Regina Rams played an entertaining and thrilling game that was not decided until the final play. Manitoba won 22-17 for their second consecutive victory over the Rams this season despite a record day for Regina QB Teale Orban (4th yr, Regina, SK).

With the victory, the Bisons run their consecutive regular season win streak to 16 games (spanning from 2005-07) – the longest in the CIS right now - and clinch first place in the Canada West conference with a 7-0 record. In addition, the team tied a Bison all-time record for most consecutive regular season wins (16: 1968-70).

“Regina played extremely hard today. We fought tooth-and-nail with them and did not expect anything less from the Rams. This is an incredibly difficult conference and every week brings new challenges to our team,” commented Bison football head coach Brian Dobie.

With a soupy field condition because of constant rain, the Bisons and Rams were locked into a battle of field position throughout the game. The momentum shifted several times throughout the game as the largest lead was seven by any team (7-0 early by Regina). Manitoba did not wrap up the game until a six play, 57 yard drive late in the fourth sealed the margin of victory.

The Bisons scored five minutes into the third on a John Makie (4th yr, Regina, SK) 11 yard pass to receiver Kurt Reinfort (4th yr, Winnipeg, MB) to make the score 17-15 after Regina led 15-10 at the half. The home side nursed the two point margin for 17 minutes before giving up a safety instead of punting deep in Bisons’ territory.

With the score 17-17, Manitoba caught a break when center Nick Hutchins (3rd, Southey, SK) snapped the ball high over punter Perri Scarcelli’s (3rd yr, Calgary, AB) head. Scarcelli chased down the ball and booted the ball through the end zone for an important safety with just over five minutes left. Manitoba stopped Regina and then proceeded to drive 57 yards culminating in a 15 yard FG by Scott Dixon (3rd yr, Victoria, BC) to end the scoring. Orban heaved a desperate last play throw to receiver Chad Goldie (4th yr, Sexsmith, AB) but he could only get to the Bisons’ 40 yard line.

Orban passed for two touchdowns to establish a new Canada West record for career touchdowns passes at 64 (old record: Greg Vavra at 63) in the losing effort. The conference leading passer was 22-38 passing for 279 yards and two interceptions. Jordan Sisco (2nd yr, Regina, SK) was top Rams receiver with six grabs for 91 yards while Derek Belvedere (5th yr, Pine Hill, QC) ran for 41 yards on nine carries. Brandon Ganne (3rd yr, Regina, SK), Steve Wilson (4th yr, Regina, SK) and Mat Nesbitt (5th yr, Regina, SK) tied for game-high tackles with ten.

For the Bisons, Makie threw for his second 300 yard game of the season with 338 yards on 20-33 passing with one TD and three INTs. Reinfort had six catches for 85 yards while Jordan Witzel (2nd yr, Surrey, BC) had five grabs for 33 yards and Steve Gronick (4th yr, Bethune, SK) had three receptions for 112 yards. On defence, Kenton Ononfrychuk (4th yr, Winnipeg, MB) and Mike Howard (5th yr, Victoria, BC) led the team with six tackles while Justin Cooper (3rd yr, Red deer, AB) had four tackles (two for losses) and two sacks.

Manitoba (7-0) finishes the regular season on the road against Simon Fraser (0-7) on Saturday, October 27 at 3 p.m. CT while Regina (5-2) faces provincial rival Saskatchewan (4-2) at 2:30 p.m. CT. on October 27.
