September
30 - As the month of September ended, the Manitoba Bisons (1-1-0)
stopped the Regina Cougars (1-1-0) from completing their weekend
series sweep by winning by a 3-2 score.
Manitoba
took advantage of two-man advantage for three goals in the second
for the victory.
The
game began strongly for the visitors as they capitalized on two
powerplay chances in the first period. On a nice three-on-two, Dustin
Bru completed the pass play with a quick shot past Bisons’ goalie
Krister
Toews.
On
a two-man advantage, the Cougars found the back of the net when
Jason Weitzel was set-up by forwards Shayne Emmons and Ryan Cruse.
After one, Regina led 2-0 but was outshot 13-5 by the Bisons.
In
the second, the Herd took control of the play with several powerplay
chances and erupted for three goals in a span of less than two minutes.
Calin
Wild started the home side scoring when he found the puck and
scored for close range. Defenseman Stewart
Thiessen and Jared
Lang with the assists. Richard
Wood fired home the second goal from Rob
Smith and Nolan
Waker. Bisons’ team captain Smith added his second point of
the game when he wired a shot past Cougars’ netminder Clint Chalmers
for the eventual game-winner at the midway point of the period.
He was set-up by Aaron
Starr and Nick
Cowan.
All
three tallies were with a two-man advantage. After two, Manitoba
3-2 and outshot Regina 26-10.
In
the third, the parade to the penalty box for both teams did not
abate but neither team could generate another goal and the Bisons
held onto their first conference victory of the 2006-07 season.
First
year head coach Don
MacGillivray earned his first CIS coaching win. The Bisons came
away with at least a win in their first home opener weekend series
for the fifth consecutive season.
Regina
goes home to host Alberta next weekend.
Manitoba
travels to North Dakota for a non-conference match against the UND
Fighting Sioux on October 1 before traveling to Calgary for a conference
weekend series next week.
