Saturday, December 30th

  • 3:00 pm St. Thomas vs 4 Manitoba 1

    Players of the Game
    STU - #21 Justin MCutcheon
    Manitoba - #6 Rob Smith

In the opening game of the second annual Pete Kelly Cup it was the hometown St. Tommies Tommies defeating the visiting Manitoba Bisons 4-1 at the Aitken University Centre in Fredericton. Although they wore their home whites, the Tommies used the visiting bench -- more familiar to them in their battles with the cross-campus rivals UNB. This game would determine if the rusty and rested Tommies had any advantage over the Bisons who had played an exhibition game the evening before against the UNB Varsity Reds.

It was very late in the first period before there was any scoring, and as it seems so often the case after one team, the Bisons, had a great scoring chance at one end of the ice it was the Tommies roaring back on the three-on-two and rookie Ryan Murphy (Fredericton, NB) fired it past Kristen Toews (Kleefeld, MB) at 19:46 to give the Tommies the lead going into the dressing room.

The Tommies continued that momentum into the second period as Justin McCutheon (Ithica, NY) let the wrist shot go from the top of the circle that seemed to handcuff Toews at 1:03. As the period rolled on both teams started taking the body and at 14:38 the Bisons were on the powerplay when captain Rob Smith (Steinbach, MB) snuck in from the blueline and fired the one-timer on a cross-ice pass from Dustin Hughes (Winnipeg, MB) that beat Tommies goalie Matt Davis (Harvey, NB), who had just come into the game a few minutes earlier in sharing the duties with starter Aaron Molnar (Dorchester, ON).

Early in the third period Davis made a big save on Chris Falloon (Souris, MB) who was banging away at the doorstep. After Aaron Starr (Saskatoon, SK) just missed the outside post, the Tommies went roaring back the other way and it was Jeff Bateman (Belleville, ON) getting the insurance marker on the odd man rush. Kyle Gailey (Calgary, AB) got the empty netter to seal the deal for the Tommies with nine seconds to go in the game.

Final score was 4-1 for STU, who outshot the Bisons 30-17 in the game. Justin McCutcheon was player of the game for STU and Rob Smith was the player of the game for Manitoba. Attendance was 894.

  • 7:00 pm Saint Mary's 3 vs UNB 4 (SO)

Sunday, December 31st

  • 12:30 pm Manitoba 1 vs Saint Mary's 3

Two tired teams took to the ice Sunday at 12:30 pm for the consolation final at the Pete Kelly Cup at the Aitken University Centre in Fredericton. The Saint Mary’s Huskies were on the ice roughly 14 hours after losing to the UNB Varsity Reds in the overtime shootout Saturday night and the Manitoba Bisons were playing their third game in three days. As fatigued as they may have been, the teams played a solid game in front of a sparse crowd who were not outside enjoying the sunny last day of the year.

The first goal of the game came at 5:52 as Manitoba’s Dustin Hughes (Winnipeg, MB) deflected a shot off the post and in past Saint Mary’s starting goaltender Jasen Awalt (Eastern Passage, NS). On their third powerplay opportunity, thanks to Bison goalie Steve Christie (Winnipeg, MB) inadvertently clearing the puck over the glass, SMU tied the game when Dan Rudisuela (St. Catharines, ON) jumped on a fortuitous bounce as the puck came off the boards to him at 14:27.

The second period saw no scoring but some excitement late in the period when Manitoba’s Nolan Waker (Swift Current, SK) was awarded a penalty shot when he was hauled down while penalty killing. Waker tried to go five-hole but was stymied by the SMU netminder.

In the third period neither team could take advantage of their powerplays until at 14:21 when Scott Hotham (Barrie, ON) came off the point and let a shot go from the slot that was apparently was tipped in by Kyle Doucet (Halifax, NS) who got credit for the winning goal. The Huskies cemented the win when Ryan Rorabeck (Oshawa, ON) got the empty netter with 26 seconds to go in the game.

Final score was 3-1 for SMU and shots favoured Manitoba 22-19. Players of the game were Scott Hotham for SMU and Dustin Hughes for the Bisons.
