January
19 - University of Saskatchewan Huskies Derek Endicott and Brett
Parker scored two goals each in a 5-2 win over the University of
Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink.
The
win gave the Huskies a two-game sweep over the Bisons and was Saskatchewan’s
third victory in a row. The Huskies are now 15-3-4 on the season,
while Manitoba drops to 9-10-1.
Saskatchewan
scored their first two goals of the game in the exact same situation.
Manitoba was able to kill two five-on-three situations but just
seconds after their player returned to the ice, the Huskies were
able to beat Bison netminder Krister Toews. Endicott scored his
first of the game at 16:11 and Jeff Schmidt at 17:53 in the first
period to put Saskatchewan up 2-0.
Parker
scored his first of the game at 5:37 in the second period. Down
3-0, Manitoba head coach Don MacGillivray elected to pull Toews.
Steve Christie entered just his second game with the team. But it
didn’t take long for the Huskies to find a way to beat the
new goalie. Endicott scored his second of the game on the power
play at 14:40 in the second frame.
Manitoba
was able to break Saskatchewan goalie Jeff Harvey’s shutout
with goals 27 seconds apart near the end of the second period. Rick
Wood scored second goal in as many games at 16:10. Chris Falloon
followed at 16:37.
But
that was all Manitoba could manage to score. Parker added an empty
net goal with one minute left in the third.
Harvey
stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced in the game. Toews stopped 14
of 17 shots before he was replaced by Christie who stopped 21 of
22.
The
win was extra special for Huskie head coach Dave Adolph. Adolph,
who is in his 19th season as a coach at the CIS level, passed University
of Alberta coaching legend Clare Drake as the leader for the most
games coached in the Canada West. Adolph has now been behind the
bench for 526 conference games, Drake coached 525 games over his
28-season career with the Golden Bears.
Adolph
and the Huskies hit the road Jan. 25 and 26 to Lethbridge to take
on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. The Bisons return home
to host the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. |
