October
6 - The University of Manitoba Bisons recorded their second victory
over the University of Regina in as many nights after defeating
the Cougars by a 3-0 score in Canada West men's hockey action at
the Brandt Centre on Saturday night.
The
Cougars actually outshot Manitoba by a wide margin (31-17) but Bison
goalie Krister Toews was stellar all night, stopping all 31 Regina
shots to record his first shutout of the season.
Manitoba
opened up the scoring eight minutes into the first. With Regina's
Ryan Martin in the penalty box serving a hooking penalty, defenceman
Stewart Thiessen stepped into a slap shot from the top of the left
circle and rifled it off the right post and in.
Rookie
forward Kyle Howarth scored the first goal of his CIS career later
in the first period, notching an unassisted marker to put the Bisons
up by two.
The
score remained 2-0 until the waning moments of the third period,
when Manitoba defenceman Kip Workman's clearing attempt sailed about
190 feet straight into the Cougars' empty net, which goalie Adam
Ward had vacated seconds earlier in favour of an extra attacker.
Manitoba's win improves its Canada West record to 2-0-0, while the
Cougars drop to 0-3-1.
Manitoba
will travel down South to play the #1 ranked University of North
Dakota Fighting Sioux in an exhibition game on Sunday, October 7
at 6:07 p.m.
The
Bisons will play their homeopener next weekend with a two-game series
against undefeated Saskatchewan (2-0-0). Regina will play a two-game
non-conference series at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont.
