October
13 - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies snuck out of Manitoba
with a weekend sweep, after a last minute goal gave them a 4-3 victory
over the University of Manitoba Bisons.
Mason
Wallin's goal with 30-seconds remaining in the game, keep the Huskies
undefeated and atop the Canada West standing with a 4-0-0 record.
With the loss, Manitoba drops to .500 at 2-2-0.
Saskatchewan
also got goals from Brett Novak, Steven Gillen, and Colin Patterson,
while Mike Hellyer, Chris Fallon and Nick Cowan replied for the
Bisons.
Krister
Toews was once again the busier of the two goalies, as he faced
37-shots in the loss for Manitoba. Jeff Harvey got the call in net
for Saskatchewan, while Friday's starter Russel Monette rested.
Harvey turned aside 14-shots to pick up the win.
Head
coach Don MacGillivray, thought the Bisons improved from their 3-1
loss on Friday night.
"I
thought the pace of the game was better," said MacGillivray.
"But this one hurts a lot more then last night cause we had
a chance to win it. We did some questionable things at the end of
the game, and it was a disappointing end"
Manitoba
did manage to prevent Saskatchewan from scoring a powerplay goal
after giving up two on Friday. The Bisons held the Huskies to 0-10
with the man advantage.
"If
you're looking for bright spots, our penalty kill was very good.
Our goaltending was real good to give us a chance to win the hockey
game, but we have some things that we have to get better at for
sure."
Manitoba
jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of a Saskatchewan
penalty, to score only: 40 seconds into the game. With Novak in
the box for high sticking, Chris Fallon got the puck in the slot,
protecting it with his body. He passed it to Hellyer at the right
of the net who buried it behind Harvey for the 1-0 Bison lead.
Novak
made amends just less than six minutes later, when pulled the Huskies
with a goal of his own. As he skated in down the left wing, he one
timed a pass from Casey Lee on the opposite wing. The Saskatchewan
give-and-go evened the score at 6:23.
The
Bisons regained the lead off of some hard work by Kyle Howarth and
Travis Kornelsen. Howarth dug out the puck from a scrum in front
of the Huskies bench, head-manning it to Kornelsen who out-skated
the Huskies defender and got it across to Fallon. He chipped it
over Harvey as the Saskatchewan netminder slide across. That made
the score 2-1 for Manitoba at 16:29.
Saskatchewan
responded quickly, scoring :58 seconds later, when Gillen slapped
at a puck that just made it across the Manitoba goal line. Toews
was on his back from making an initial save and couldn't quite get
his glove on the puck as he reached behind him.
The
remainder of the first period and the second became a penalty filled
affair with a stream of Bisons and Huskies heading to the box. Each
team having to kill off two-man advantages – Manitoba having
to do it twice.
The
next goal didn't come until the 12:26 of the third period when Cowan
swatted home a bouncing puck. Harvey made a shoulder save that sent
the puck flying into the air and Cowan was able to pick it out of
the air for a 3-2 Bison lead.
Manitoba's
lead was short-lived though as Patterson scored on a deflection
from a Curtis Austring shot from the point. That tied the game at
three at 14:56.
Then
Wallin provided the heartbreaker, throwing a shot on goal from the
right face-off dot that Toews just couldn't squeeze as it went under
his blocker arm.
Manitoba
will not have any Canada West regular season games next weekend,
but they will journey to Omaha, Nebraska for a pair of exhibition
games against the University of Nebraska-Omaha and the University
of Canisius-Alabama. The Bisons next Canada West action will be
October 26 and 27 when they host the University of Alberta Golden
Bears.
