Mavericks Stomp Bison, 8-1
by University of Nebraska at Omaha

October 19 - Senior forward Mick Lawrence scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead a UNO offensive attack that routed Manitoba, 8-1, in the first round of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede Saturday night in front of 5,889 people at the Qwest Center Omaha.

UNO took full advantage of the power play and got the scoring started early, when senior forward captain Bryan Marshall lit the lamp for a power-play score when he poked a loose puck past Manitoba's goalie, Steve Christie, just 4:59 into the game. UNO sophomore defenseman Mark Bernier and freshman forward Joey Martin each added a power-play goal of their own to extend the Mavs' lead to 3-0 at the end of the first.

Lawrence first goal of the night was a power-play marker at 5:25 in the second, followed by an unassisted shorthanded goal by Dan Swanson four minutes later and an even-strength score by Dan Charleston that push the UNO lead to 6-1.

Manitoba's Stephane Lenoski ended Nebraska-Omaha's bid for a fourth straight shutout with a power-play goal at 13:49 of the second stanza.

Halfway through the third Lawrence beat Manitoba goalkeeper Justin Harris for his second score of the night, but it was senior forward Brandon Scero who put the exclamation point on the Maverick victory when he intercepted a Bison pass deep in their zone and beat Harris with a shot from the circle 14:22 into the third.

Seven different Mavs scored on the night. Dan Charleston matched Lawrence with three-point on the evening. Martin scored a pair of goals in his first action for UNO, while fellow freshman Alain Goulet and Rich Purslow got in on the action with two assists each.

Jeremie Dupont had to make just 18 stops on the night for the Mavs, helping the Mavs improve their overall mark against Manitoba to 10-2.

UNO will square off against Alabama-Huntsville in the finals of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede Saturday night at 7:05. UAH advanced to the finals with a last second victory over Canisius in the afternoon game Friday at the Qwest Center.
