27 - The University of Manitoba Bisons were unable to hold off the
No. 3-ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears two nights in a row,
losing Saturday evening. The
Golden Bears outscored the Bisons 7-4, escaping from Winnipeg with
at lest one win on the weekend. With the win, Alberta moves to 5-2-1
on the season while Manitoba drops to .500 with the loss, and a
3-3-0 record.
Leading
the way for Alberta was Eric Hunter and Tim Krymusa who each had
two goals apiece. Also scoring for the Bears was Derek Ryan, Jesse
Gimblett and Brian Woogler. Replying for Manitoba was Chris Falloon,
Stephane Lenoski, Rick Wood and Nolan Waker.
Alberta
struck first, getting a goal from Hunter on the powerplay at 11:18
of the opening stanza. The Bears broke in on Bisons netminder Krister
Toews with a give-n-go, and the puck it a stick in front as Toews
went to his right, giving Hunter an open net to slide the puck in
as he followed up the play.
The
Bears kept the pressure on the hometown Bisons, scoring three minutes
later on a 3-on-1. A triangle of passes, working left to right,
and Ryan was the last touch the puck as put it past Toews. That
put Alberta up 2-0 at 13:50.
Manitoba
responded by getting a powerplay marker from Falloon right afterwards.
The Bisons cycled the puck around in the Bears end, and playing
the point on his opposite hand, Fallon rocketed a shot from the
left side that rang off the post and in. The Bisons first goal came
at 16:31. They added one more before the horn went for the first
period, crowding Bears goaltender Blake Grenier. After a scramble
in front of the net, Lenoski finally whacked it past Grenier to
even the score with 29-seconds in the period.
Alberta
started the second period strong, scoring two-quick goals to regain
their two-goal lead. First, Krymusa tipped a point-shot by Ryan
Stempfle at 2:12. Then Gimblett was able to get a few chances to
the left the net, finally chipping it over Toews left pad at 3:28.
On
a great single effort by Wood, Manitoba pulled within one. Wood
streaked down the left wing, letting a shot go from the top of the
circle that rang off the far post. He gathered his own rebound and
put it past Grenier from the slot at 8:13. Manitoba then knotted
the score at four when Waker lifted a backhand over the shoulder
of Grenier from the left of the net. Waker's goal at 10:20 chased
Grenier from the net for the Bears, who chose to bring in Aaron
Sorochan.
In
the third, Alberta again opened the period with two successive goals.
Hunter netted his second goal on another give-n-go, scoring from
the left-slot as Toews slide across at 4:55. Then Woogler backhanded
the puck through the five-hole of Toews from the right of the net
at 8:18. Alberta added one more after a mix-up at the Bears blue-line
sent Krymusa in all alone on a breakaway. Krymusa went to his backhand,
potting his second goal of the night.
Sorochan
stopped all 13-shots he faced, as he picked up the win in relief
for the Bears. Toews made 27-saves in the losing effort for the
Bisons.
Next
up for Manitoba, they will travel to B.C. to take on the No. 6-ranked
Thunderbirds. Alberta will remain on the road to play the Cougars
in Regina.
