November
9 - A late rally by the Lethbridge Pronghorns fell short as the
visiting Manitoba Bisons skated to a 6-4 victory in Canada West
men’s hockey action this eveing. After spotting the Bisons
a 3-0 lead, the Horns battled back to make a game of it, only to
see the Bisons score into a empty net with 28 seconds remaining
to seal the win.
Travis
Kornelsen (Riverton, MB, 2nd year) opened the scoring for Manitoba,
his first of three on the night, beating Horns starter John Haggis
(Calgary, AB, 5th year) five-hole from a sharp angle. While on a
power play, Bison leading scorer Chris Falloon (Souris, MB, 4th
year) doubled the Bison lead to two with under four minutes remaining
in the opening period. Horns sniper Jason Roberts had a glorious
chance to cut into the Bison lead, but his breakaway shot rung off
the crossbar.
Just
like the opening period, Kornelsen opened the scoring, putting the
Bisons up 3-0. He collected a rebound off the back boards and beat
Haggis to the far post for a wrap around.
The
third marker by the Bisons awoke a sleeping Horns team, picking
up two goals in the final 11 minutes of the period. Logan Lavorato
(Lethbridge, AB, 3rd year) finished off a Horns three on one after
a great feed from Lucio Pucci-Daniele (Kelowna, BC, 2nd year). Freshman
Derek LeBlanc followed with a power play marker, taking a back door
feed and one timing it past Bison goaltender Krister Toews (Kleefeld,
MB, 4th year).
After
a power play to start the period produced nothing for the Horns,
the Bisons struck 17 seconds after the man advantage with Kornelsen
completing the hat trick.
The
Bisons regained the three goal lead with Michael Hellyer (Brandon,
MB, 1st year) lifting a back hand over a sprawled Haggis off an
odd man rush.
Horns
captain Shaun Norrie responded quickly for the U of L cutting the
lead back to two, beating Toews with a slap shot glove side. Before
Horns fans could settle back in their seats, Steve Zmudczynski (Thorold,
ON, 2nd year) cut the lead back to one 37 seconds later. Zmudczynski
broke in on a two on two and received pass beat Toews to the glove
side.
With
the goaltender pulled, the Horns turned the puck over and paid dearly
with Richard Wood (Houston, BC, 3rd year) sealing the game with
the empty netter.
Haggis
turned away 27 shots in the loss and Toews was solid in goal for
the Bisons turning away 31 of the Horns 35 shots.
With
the loss the Horns losing streak hits six games and their record
falls to 2-7-0, while the Bisons improve to 6-3-0.
