November
10 - The Lethbridge Pronghorns, mired in a six game losing streak,
rebounded from a Friday night loss to the Manitoba Bisons with a
5-2 victory in Canada West men’s hockey action Saturday night.
Similar
to the previous night, the Bisons hit the scoreboard first, as Calin
Wild (Winnipeg, MB, 2nd year) picked up a juicy rebound and slid
it past Horns starter Scott Bowles (Penticton, BC, 1st year).
Bowles
held the fort for the Horns early, turning away numerous Bison opportunities,
until the Horns could respond. Fresh out the penalty box, Andrew
Courtney (Belleville, ON, 2nd year) picked up his first of the season,
breaking down the wing and ripping a shot five hole on a surprised
Bison starter, Justin Harris (Petersfield, MB, 2nd). Harris was
making his first start of the season.
Freshman
Derek LeBlanc (Brandon, MB) gave the Horns their first lead of the
weekend while shorthanded. As time was winding down in the period,
LeBlanc scored a highlight reel goal, out waiting Harris as he skated
past the net, then reached back and tucked the puck home.
In
a penalty filled second period, the Horns were the only team to
capitalize. On a two man advantage, college transfer Tyler Stella
(Blairmore, AB, 4th year) was the recipient of a back door pass
for a tap in through Harris’ legs. The Horns went 1-9 on the
power play for the period, while the Bisons only had two opportunities.
On
another two man advantage, to start the third period, Devin Featherstone
(Calgary, AB, 1st year) extended the Horns lead to 4-1 with a one
timer from the point that found the top corner past a screened Harris.
Former
Lethbridge Hurricane, Mark Olafson (Winnipeg, MB, 1st year) responded
for the Bisons cutting the Lethbridge lead to two with a ping pong
shot that hit a couple of legs and found the back of the net behind
Bowles.
Steve
Zmudczynski (Thorold, ON, 2nd year) sealed the victory for the Horns,
stealing the puck at his own blueline and on the breakaway beat
Harris five holes.
The
Horns power play continues to be a point of contention, last year
the Horns power play was tops in the conference and tonight they
went 2 for 13. The Bisons finished the night 0 for 8.
Freshman
Scott Bowles continues to be a bright spot for the Horns, stopping
37 of 39 Bison shots, while Harris made 30 saves in the loss.
Manitoba
returns home to host Calgary on November 16 and 17. Game time is
7:00 pm at the Max Bell Centre. The teams met in the pre-season
with Calgary coming out ahead by a 8-3 score.
