November
16 - The University of Calgary used some key additions to down the
University of Manitoba on the road Friday evening, 6-4.
The
Dinos had two former professional players returning to the ice after
serving one-year of CIS ineligibility. Forward Jared Aulin, formerly
of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and goaltender Justin Webb, formally
of the ECHL's Long Beach Ice Dogs made their CIS-debut Friday evening.
Aulin, only the ninth NHLer to suit up in the CIS and the first
in 22 years, recorded four assists – all the third period.
Webb made 13-saves while picking up his first CIS win.
"[Aulin's]
a good player. He's offensively gifted, moves the puck to right
areas," said Bisons head coach Don MacGillivray. "We got
running around and you turn the puck over when his line was on the
ice and they made us pay. They executed their three-on-two, their
four-on-two, and that's the difference in the hockey game."
Calgary
entered the game winless in their last seven games, including four
overtime losses, but now move to 2-5-4. With the loss, Manitoba
drops to 6-5-0.
Barry
Horman and Brett O'Malley each had two goals for the Dinos, while
Reid Jorgensen and Aaron Richards rounded out the scoring for Calgary.
Manitoba replied with goals by Chris Fallon, Chris Benias, Rick
Wood and Nolan Waker. Krister Toews faced 46 shots while in net
for the Bisons.
Aulin
received a rude welcoming when Stewart Thiessen hit him hard deep
in Manitoba's own end with just over three minutes to go in the
first period. After being wrestled to the ground by Dinos captain
Ryan Annesley, Thiessen was given two-minutes for hitting from behind
and a game misconduct. It didn't get easier for Aulin though as
he felt a board-rattling hit from Bison defenceman Dalyn Flatt only
two minutes later.
Calgary
opened the scoring at 10:21 of the second period. The Dinos blocked
a Bison clearing attempt along the side boards, and moments later
Jorgensen got the puck standing to the right of the Bison net, going
high blocker for his third goal of the year.
The
Herd were quick to counter, evening the score two minutes later.
Fallon finished a nice end-to-end rush by the Bisons, one-timing
a pass from Travis Kornelsen. Fallon's fourth of the season came
at 12:36.
Before
the end of the second period, Calgary tacked on one more goal. Wheat
collected a rebound at the front of the Bison net, potting his fourth
of the season, with 3:56 remaining in the second.
Benias
knotted the game at two, scoring short-handed, after he created
a turnover at the Dinos blueline and skated in went high over Webb's
glove hand. Benias' first goal of the season came at 3:02 of the
third period.
The
Dinos scored the next two goals: Horman's first after a Bison turnover
at the Bison blue line and O'Malley's first after Calgary walked
in untouched. The goals came at 8:51 and 12:29 with Aulin setting
up both goals. Wood scored Manitoba's third goal, finding the back
of the net after a Kyle Howarth pass at 14:04. O'Malley and Horman
scored their second goals both banging in loose pucks in the front
of the Bison net at 15:32 and 18:00. Waker added a late goal for
the Bisons to make the final 6-4.
Manitoba
and Calgary will play game two of their weekend series, Saturday
night at the Max Bell Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
