17 - The University of Calgary Dinos beat the University of Manitoba
Bisons 3-2 in overtime Saturday night, for their second victory
in as many nights, sweeping the weekend series at Max Bell Arena.
Dinos
Forward Reid Jorgensen scored halfway through the extra frame after
the Bisons forced overtime with a late third period goal by Travis
Kornelson.
“It
was a tough break because we battled hard to get the one point.
Every shot is a good one in overtime and it looked like the shot
changed direction on [Bisons goaltender] Krister,”said Bisons
head coach Don MacGillivray, “Calgary is the best 1-5 team
I’ve seen thus far because they’ve got a great hockey
club.”
The
Bisons (6-6-0) came into the game tied with UBC for third place
in the Canada West Division standings with 14 points while Calgary
(3-5-4) came into the game having just recently snapped an eight
game winless streak. The Dinos beat Manitoba 6-4 on Friday night.
Aaron
Richards and Kyle Annesley also scored for the Dinos while Manitoba
got their goals from Riley Dudar and Kornelson.
The
game started slowly until the two teams exchanged rough stuff towards
the end of the period as a Dinos players jammed Manitoba goalie
Krister Toews. The net result was multiple misconduct penalties
and an extra roughing penalty against Manitoba. The Dinos scored
on the ensuing power play as Aaron Richards buried a rebound off
of a Reid Jorgensen point shot.
The
Bisons killed off back to back two man advantages to start the second,
aided by the slashing penalty that Jared Aulin took with 30 seconds
left in the Richard Wood cross-checking penalty. The Bisons had
back to back man advantages of their own but were unable to beat
Dinos Goaltender Jeff Weber. The Bisons cycled the puck well and
had chance after chance thwarted by the patient Calgary penalty
killing unit. Finally, on their sixth power play of the period,
Riley Dudar got the home squad on the board.
The
Bisons had some quality scoring chances as they opened the third
on the power play. Nick Cowan nearly scored as he tipped the puck
through two defenders and broke away all alone. The deadlock was
broken by Dinos Kyle Annesley who was left wide open as he buried
a power play goal to put Calgary ahead 2-1. Travis Kornelsen tied
it up with less than four minutes left in the third period with
a beautiful individual effort.
The
Dinos had more energy in the overtime period and Reid Jorgensen
capitalized on an odd man rush, deflecting the Dustin Hatlelid centering
pass to win it for the visitors.
The
Bisons will hit the road for their next three games, starting on
Tuesday with an exhibition match in Bemidji against the Bemidji
State Beavers. The team will then travel to Saskatchewan for a weekend
set with the University of Regina Cougars (Nov.23th and 24th)
