Undoubtedly
the most successful alumnus to come out of the University of Manitoba
Bison Hockey program Mike played two seasons with the Bisons before
signing as a free agent in the NHL for the 1985-86 season. While
with the Bisons Mike amassed 139 points (62 goals 77 assists) in
just 69 games. In his rookie season Mike was named CIAU Player of
the Year. The following season Mike was also an All Canadian as
he was named the conference Player of the Year for the second year
in a row.
Obviously
ready to take the next step in 1985 Mike signed a free agent contract
with the New York Rangers. The success he had with the Bisons continued
as in his rookie season he lead the Rangers in scoring 22 goals,
65 points and was named to the NHL's prestigious All Rookie Team.
The
following season a trade sent Mike to Washington where he spent
the next six seasons. Once again as a league all star in 1988-89
Mike lead his team in scoring.
Mike
finished off his career with seasons in both Toronto and Vancouver
before a recurring back injury forced him to retire. In 866 games
Mike accounted for 292 goals 466 assists for 758 regular season
points over 12 NHL seasons.
Mike
was inducted into the Bison Hockey Hall of Fame on January 9, 2001
and is the only Bison to have his jersey retired (#7 on January
26, 2004)
Mike
now lives in Winnipeg with his wife Christine and their three children
Matt, Katie, and Mark.
