September 29 - In Head Coach Brian Idalski's home debut, the Fighting
Sioux women's hockey team emerged victorious in an exhibition game
against Manitoba, 3-1. UND outshot the Bisons in each period and
finished with a total of 25 shots compared to the Bisons' 12.
Manitoba
was able to take the early lead in the first period as Becca
King fired one past goalie Brittany Kirkham (So., Nepean, Ont.)
for its only goal. King's goal came midway through the first period.
The
Sioux would answer back as Ashley Paulson (So., Onalaska, Wis.)
found the back of the net for the Sioux's first goal. Melissa Jaques
(Jr., Cooks Creek, Man.) and Casie Hanson (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.)
are credited with assists on the play.
UND's
Ashley Lynch (So., Gilbert Plains, Man.), a 2006-07 WCHA All-Rookie
Team honoree, would score the unassisted, game-winning goal
with 6:36 remaining in the third period.
Less
than a minute later, UND freshman, Stephanie Roy (Grande Digue,
N.B.), added an insurance goal to seal the 3-1 Sioux victory.
Goalie
Brittany Kirkham would earn the victory between the pipes for
the Sioux. Kirkham finished with nine saves in the contest. Bisons
goalie Stacey
Corfield is saddled with the loss. Corfield saved 22 of
25 shots for Manitoba.
The
Herd will open the Canada West regular season at home next weekend
against Lethbridge. Game time on Friday, October 5 and Saturday,
October 6 is 7:00 p.m. at the Max Bell Arena.
