October 20 - The University of Manitoba Bisons completed a two game
sweep of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies with a 3-1 victory
at Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink on Saturday night.
The
Bisons took an early 3-0 lead in Friday’s 3-2 win but Saskatchewan
opened the scoring Saturday.
The
Huskies scored the power play goal tipped in by captain Chelsea
Purcell on a shot from the blue line by Crystal Kappel at 5:45 in
the first period. The team was on a power play after Bison Shannon
Hoogsteen was called for interference.
But
the lead didn’t last long. Manitoba Bison Addie Miles tied
the score up with a shot from the top of the face off circle at
6:42. The Bisons scored again at 15:41 off a goal from Chantal Larocque
in the second period.
Saskatchewan
missed an opportunity to tie the game on a five-on-three in the
second period after Manitoba’s Chantel DeSpiegelaere and Tammy
Brade each took hooking penalties one minute and 16 seconds apart.
Bisons defence and goaltender Stacey Corfield kept Saskatchewan’s
attempts at bay.
Manitoba’s
Sarah Stebeleski scored the final goal of the game at 13:01 in the
third period. Saskatchewan once again tried to get back into the
game after DeSpiegelaere took an interference penalty in her own
zone at 18:42. However, the Bisons kept control of the puck, winding
down the clock to the buzzer.
Huskie
goaltender Vanessa Frederick stopped 27 of 30 shots she faced in
the game, 10 came in the first period. Manitoba’s Corfield
stopped 22 of 23 for the Bisons.
The
win moves Manitoba to 4-0 on the season. The Huskies drop to 2-4.
Saskatchewan
won’t hit the ice again until Nov. 2-3 in Edmonton against
the University of Alberta Pandas. Manitoba travels to meet the University
of British Columbia Thunderbirds Oct. 26-27 in Vancouver.
