October 26 - Despite mounting a third period charge, the Thunderbirds
fell 4-2 to the Manitoba Bisons at the Winter Sports Centre on Friday
night.
The
'Birds found themselves heading into the third period down three
goals, all of which came in the first period, where UBC took seven
penalties. Despite only giving up one goal on the powerplay, the
'Birds were unable to maintain any offensive pressure and it showed
in the shot totals, with UBC being outshot 31-10 after two periods.
"There
were definitely a couple times in the first period where we were
caught chasing rather than initiating," said UBC head coach
Dave Newson. "That was the difference in the third. We were
initiating, and they were the ones taking the penalties."
The
T-Birds came out much stronger in the third, and threatened the
Bisons' lead with two goals from Kirsten Mihalcheon and Hilary Spires,
but Meghan Ross put any hopes of a comeback to rest when she restored
Manitoba's lead to two goals with just under nine minutes remaining.
The
Bisons were able to hold on to that lead and improve their record
to a perfect 5-0-0 with a 4-2 win. UBC is still in search of it's
first win, as they fall to 0-5-0 to begin the year. Stacey Corfield
saved 26 of 28 shots for the win, while UBC's Melinda Choy stopped
36 of 40 in a losing effort.
"The
third period was positive for us, but the big negative is that we
aren't gonna win many games if we come out and play one period with
urgency," said Newson. "We need to start games and complete
them with urgency. The good news is we showed what we are capable
of against a pretty good team when we bring our A game."
Stephanie
Messner opened the scoring for Manitoba on the powerplay at 11:36
of the first period. Addie Miles and Sarah Stebelski had the other
two first period markers for the Bisons.
The
same teams will meet again tomorrow at the Winter Sports Centre,
where Manitoba will once again put it's perfect record on the line,
and UBC will be in search of their first win of the year. The puck
drops at 7:30 p.m.
