October 27 - The Thunderbirds (0-6-0) couldn't generate any offence
against Manitoba (6-0-0) and fell once again to the Bisons, losing
2-0 at the Winter Sports Centre on Saturday.
Again,
the Thunderbirds played the nation's third ranked team competitively,
and again they came up two goals short of their first points of
the season. On Friday night, early defensive lapses cost the 'Birds,
as they fell 4-2 to the Bisons. On Saturday, they held Manitoba
to just two goals, but couldn't find any of their own, as UBC was
outshot 32-10 and held off the score sheet.
Melinda
Choy was stellar in net for the 'Birds, making 30 saves to keep
her side in the game, but UBC couldn't maintain any offensive pressure
against Manitoba, and were held to ten shots all game, and just
one in the third period.
Dana
Hoogsteen made 10 saves in goal for the Bisons and picked up the
shutout. Katherine O'Rourke and Sarah Stebeleski provided the offence
for Manitoba.
Despite
dropping both games against the Bisons, the T-Birds showed some
promise. They were able to keep up with the nation's third-ranked
team for much of the weekend, and although they only managed two
goals, Manitoba boasts Canada West's best goals against total to
go along with its perfect record, having allowed just six goals
in as many games to begin the year. In fact, four of the six UBC
losses on the year have been against top-three teams. They began
the season with a pair of losses against top-ranked Alberta.
UBC
can look forward to a less daunting task next weekend, as the 'Birds
will look to pick up their first points of the year against a winless
Lethbridge side. The two teams will play in Lethbridge on Saturday
at 6p.m. and Sunday at 1p.m.
Manitoba
returns home after a four game road trip to host Regina on November
2 & 3. The Cougars are four points back of the Herd with a 4-2-0
record. The Bisons and Cougars each won three regular season meetings
against each other last season before Manitoba dumped Regina two
games to one in the Canada West semi-final on their way to a CIS
Bronze medal.
