November 2 - The #3 ranked University of Manitoba Bisons women’s
hockey team (7-0-0) defeated the #9 University of Regina Cougars
(4-3-0) on Friday night at the Max Bell Centre to remain undefeated
and atop the Canada West Women’s Hockey Standings.
The
Bisons scored three goals early in the first period, and that stood
up as the Cougars could only muster up one good period against the
division leaders. The Cougars pressed the Bisons hard in the second
period and got within one goal, but a tenacious Manitoba squad was
resilient and withheld the surge.
“It
probably wasn’t the prettiest game to watch, but it was a
solid effort and sometimes you have to take the ugly win”
said Bisons coach Jon Rempel.
Forward
Tammy Brade opened the scoring three minutes into the first period,
tipping a Chelsea Braun centering pass over Regina Goaltender Alyssa
MacDougall.
Later
in the frame, on a delayed penalty, and with an extra player on
the ice, the Bisons distributed the puck neatly in the Cougars zone.
Stephanie Messner buried the rebound after a wild scramble in which
a few Bisons, including Sarah Stebelski whacked away at the puck.
A
wide open Sarah Stebelski scored on a beautiful feed from Captain
Leanne Kisil to put the home side up by a score of 3-0. The goal
was scored while the Cougars had two players in the penalty box.
The Bisons moved the puck around well on another two man advantage,
but were unable to extend the lead.
The Bisons killed off a two-man disadvantage, then broke out on
a two on one, which resulted in a quality chance for Addie Miles,
drawing a roughing penalty from the Cougars defender.
Regina Forward Kelsie Graham batted in a rebound off a shot from
Julie Paetsch for the Cougars first goal.
Forward
Jayme-Lee Green walked around the Bisons defence and put a nifty
deke and slipped one through the legs of Bison Goalie Stacey Corfield
to pull the Cougars within one.
The Cougars came out firing early in the third period, but Goaltender
Stacey Corfeld was outstanding stopping everything that came her
way.
Late in the third period, The Bisons began to pick their play up
and started to take it to the Cougars. The Bisons took advantage
of a few late period power plays to get some quality scoring opportunities.
The
Bisons face the Cougars again tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at the
Max Bell Centre.
