November 3 - The University of Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey
team (7-1-0) was upset by the visiting University of Regina Cougars
(4-4-0) 1-0 on Saturday night at the Max Bell Centre, handing the
team their first loss of the season.
The
#9-ranked Cougars scored a power-play goal late in the third period
and hung on for the victory as the #3-ranked Bisons struggled to
produce offensively. Manitoba swarmed the offensive zone late in
the period but were unable to register on the scoreboard.
The
first five minutes of the game was back and forth as the Bisons
and Cougars exchanged chances.
The
Bisons killed off back to back penalties with some extremely disciplined
penalty killing as the Cougars outshot Manitoba by a 9-2 margin.
Goaltender Dana Hoogsteen was the team’s best defender, stopping
four shots point blank and surrendering no rebounds.
Assistant
Captain Stephanie Messner had the best scoring chance of the period,
nearly scoring off of wrist shot and drawing a Cougars roughing
penalty.
The
second period belonged to the Bisons as they were in the Cougars
zone most of the period, cycling the puck well, and displaying excellent
offensive zone presence. Forwards Tammy Brade and Addie Miles both
had excellent scoring chances but were stymied by Cougars Goaltender
Alyssa MacDougall.
The
Bisons best chance of the second period came on a three-on-one rush
in which Leanne Kisils move was stuffed by MacDougall. The Bisons
outshot the Cougars 11-6 in the middle frame, led by three shots
from super-sniper Addie Miles.
The
Bisons were called for a bench minor late in the third period and
the Cougars took advantage. Assistant Captain Karissa Swann buried
a Julie Paetsch pass, a nifty goal that stood up as the game-winner.
The
Bisons now look to re-focus and prepare for next weekend. The Bisons
welcome the No.1-ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears to the
Max Bell Centre for weekend games on November 9th and 10th. The
puck drops for both games at 7:00 p.m.
