November 24 - The University of Manitoba Bisons’s Chantal
Larocque scored the game-winning goal in a shoot-out to win 2-1
over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at Rutherford
Rink.
The
No. 10 ranked Huskies gave the No. 2 ranked Bisons a run for their
money. Both teams came out strong and full of energy as they fought
hard for puck possession. The first period ended with no score and
shots were 11-9 for the Huskies.
The
second period had the game’s first goal seven minutes in.
Saskatchewan had two girls in the box and just as Kelsey Tulloch
stepped back onto the ice, Manitoba’s Leanne Kisil took advantage
of the situation and put the puck into the net past Huskie goaltender
Chantal Armet. Kisil was assisted by Stephanie Messner and Meghan
Ross.
Two
minutes into the third, the Huskies gave Manitoba a two-man advantage.
The Dogs killed the power play well, allowing no shots on goal.
Eight seconds after the penalty kill, Huskie Kelsey Tulloch scored
on Manitoba goaltender Stacey Corfield.
As
time wound down, the Bisons and Huskies went shot for shot at six
for each team. The period ended 1-1 forcing a five-minute overtime.
The
overtime period had close calls by each team, but went without score.
Huskie leading scorer Dayna King nearly scored after she charged
the net on a one-on-two. She had another chance again just a few
short seconds later on a back handed shot but Corfield made the
stop once again.
The
game would be decided in a shootout.
The
Huskies took first crack with Breanne George’s shot was blocked.
Manitoba’s Sarah Stebeleski took the Bison’s first shot,
but was also blocked. Huskie Robin Ulrich hit the post with her
shot and then Bison shooter Messner missed the net. Next went Chelsea
Purcell for Saskatchewan who was blocked. Armet could only get a
piece of Kisil’s shot and it deflected into the top corner
of the net to score her second of the night. Huskie Laura Conner
then made her attempt and was shut down. She was followed by Bison
Chantal Larocque who’s shot went in between the knees of Armet
to secure the win. The final score was 2-1 for Manitoba.
Corfield
stopped 28 of 29 shots she faced in the game, while Armet stopped
21 of 23.
The
win for Manitoba put their standings at 10-2-0 and Saskatchewan
at 6-6-2.
Manitoba
will travel to Regina for their next game on November 30 at 7 p.m.
Saskatchewan will not play until the new year on January 4 when
Alberta visits Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
