November 30 - Led by goaltender Alyssa MacDougall, the #7 University
of Regina Cougars defeated the #3 University of Manitoba Bisons
4-3 in a shootout in Canada West women’s hockey action Friday
night at the Sherwood Arena.
Despite
being outshot 50-22, the Cougars (8-4-2) managed to hand the Bisons
(10-2-1) their third loss of the season. MacDougall was strong between
the pipes for the hometown team, as she stopped 47 shots in regulation,
and another 4 in the decisive shootout.
Getting
her team off on the right foot, Karissa Swan put the Cougars up
1-0 midway through the first period on a cross-ice feed from Julie
Paetsch. Facing a number of quality chances in the opening frame,
MacDougall stood tall, and allowed her team to skate to the dressing
room with the lead after one.
Seven
minutes into the middle stanza Addie Miles squared things up, banging
a rebound past the Regina goaltender. Regina would respond, however,
notching two of their own goals in the next four minutes to lead
3-1 after two periods.
After
killing off a 5-on-3 Manitoba power-play to start the third frame,
the Cougars looked to be in cruise control. However, after cutting
the lead to one midway through the period, the Bisons were able
to capitalize on a goal line scramble to knot the contests at three
with only nine seconds remaining in regulation.
After
overtime proved to be indecisive, the teams headed to a shootout.
When the dust settled, it was Karissa Swan’s marker that would
prove to be the game winner, as the Cougars move to within four
points of the Bisons.
The
teams will hit the ice again in Regina on Friday night, with the
Cougars looking for the sweep. Puck drop goes at 7 p.m. at the Sherwood
Arena.
