| Head
Coach Jon Rempel is no stranger to Bison Sports having worked closely
with all of the sports teams at the University over the course of
the past five years and also playing for Men's Head Coach Mike Sirant
from 1993-1996 where he was a three-time Academic All-Canadian.
Jon
graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1995 and then left the University
of Manitoba to push towards a professional hockey career highlighted
by a two game tryout with the Portland Pirates of the A.H.L. in
1997 - 1998. Rempel also played two and a half years in the East
Coast Hockey League with the Baton Rouge KingFish before retiring
after half a year in the British National League with the Slough
Jets.
Upon
his return to the University in 1999, he completed his Bachelor
of Recreation Studies, began working with Bison Sports and also
continued on with his coaching career that includes one year as
an assistant with the Eastman Selects of the Manitoba AAA Midget
League, one year as an assistant with the Winnipeg South Blues of
the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and one year as an assistant with
the University of Manitoba Women's Hockey Team. In 2003-04 he earned
his NCCP Level II certification and enrolled in the NCCP High Performance
1 Seminar (Advanced 1) for the Summer/Fall of 2005.
At
the end of the 2004-05 season, Jon
was named the Canada West Coach of the Year and was a Guest Coach
at the Warner
Showcase in Lethbridge.
In
two years under Jon's tutelage, the Bisons have advanced to two
consecutive Canada West Finals as well as the CIS Nationals two
years ago where they won bronze, a first for the program.
With
an excellent recruiting class joining the program, and a solid nucleus
of returning veterans, the 2006-2007 season has the potential to
be one of the program's strongest in its 10 year history.
