Manitoba Sweeps Weekend Series with 3-1 Win Over Calgary

September 23 - At Winnipeg, MB, the #8 Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer continued their winning ways as they defeated the Calgary Dinos 3-1 at University Stadium. With the victory, Manitoba has extended their conference winning streak to four games and record to 5-1, good for first place in Canada West. Calgary record stands now at 3-3 after the third week of action.

Bison women’s soccer head coach Walt McKee stated, “It was a real team effort today against Calgary. We capitalized on our chances and rallied when we went behind early in the match. We have set ourselves in a good position in the conference but now have a road trip that will be a good test. I am pleased we have taken care of earning maximum points during this weekend homestand.”

The Bisons were trying to complete the home sweep of Alberta teams (beat Lethbridge 2-0 on Sat. Sept. 22) on the weekend but Calgary scored the first goal and the home side had to play catch-up.

The Dinos had the opening tally when forward Morena Ianiello scored off a corner kick at the 15 minute mark. Manitoba responded quickly with a rocket of a shot by forward Caley Miskimmin at the 18 minute mark. The game was high-paced and both teams had chances in the first half. The Herd struck again at the 30 minute mark when CIS and Canada West Female Athlete of the week Karli Colpitts headed in a spectacular goal after Desiree Scott fired a high kick into the box. At the half, Manitoba 2-1.

In the second half, both teams pressed for the crucial next goal and the Herd found it first when midfielder Stephanie Rurak found Colpitts in the box and she placed another strong header into the back of the net at the 79 minute mark. Calgary could not mount a sustained rally and fell 3-1.

Ashley Forbes was not tested often and earned the win with one save. Alana Knowles was more active with nine saves in the loss. Manitoba led 31-4 in shots while Manitoba had nine to four in corner kicks.

The Herd will now travel on the road to face Alberta on Saturday, September 29 and Saskatchewan on Sunday, September 30. Calgary plays Lethbridge in a home-and-home series on September 29-30.
