30 - Mental errors plagued The University of Saskatchewan Huskies
as the eighth ranked University of Manitoba Bisons defeated the Huskies
3-0 at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.
Both
teams came out aggressively in the first half resulting in great scoring
opportunities in the early minutes. Second-year Huskie Jamie Lemay
had daylight between her and the Manitoba net but her strike was denyed
by keeper Ashley
Forbes. Manitoba had an excellent chance as well as forward Desiree
Scott's powerful shot sailed just above the net through the football
uprights.
In
the 35th minute, Huskies keeper Kailee Marland wandered aggressively
out of her net to stop a Manitoba rush. Scott would take full advantage
of the wide-open Huskie net to give the Bisons the advantage. Karli
Colpitts was credited with the assist. Moments later on an almost
identical play, the Bisons Caley
Miskimmin would deposit it into the yawning cage to gives the
Bisons a 2-0 advantage. Colpitts registered her second helper of the
afternoon on the goal.
To
begin the second half, the Huskies elected to change their goalkeeper
going with Jennifer Banning after a shaky first half by Marland. The
change in keeper seemed to spark the Huskies as Jamie Lemay nearly
opened up the scoring in the 55th minute. She eluded several Manitoba
defenders before being stopped once again by keeper Forbes.
In
the 58th minute however, Banning put any Huskie momentum to rest as
she passed directly to the upcoming Bison, Scott. Banning tried to
atone for her error by leaving her net to contest the shot but Scott
calmly eluded her and found the net for the 3-0 Bison advantage.
Huskies head coach Tom LaPointe was pleased with the play of his team
coming off a lackluster effort against the University of Regina.
“The effort was fantastic”, said LaPointe. “The
score wasn’t reflective of the game”. “Our mental
errors cost us”.
Manitoba
will return home and enjoy a bye week. Then battle the same opponents
as Alberta visits on October 13 and Saskatchewan on October 14.
Game times are 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
