13 - The University of Manitoba Bison women's soccer team set a new
record for points and wins in a season, defeating the University of
Alberta Pandas, 3-2 Saturday morning.
Getting
goals from Desiree
Scott, Caley
Miskimmin and Karli
Colpitts, Manitoba won its seventh game of the year, breaking
the old record of six, set last year. The 8th-ranked Bisons improve
their record to 7-2-0 and move closer to their first ever playoff
appearance. The Pandas got goals from Veronique Mayer and Lauren Kruper,
as they dropped to 4-5-0.
Scott
and Miskimmin swarmed the Pandas net throughout the game, allowing
Manitoba to control the play, and generated over 20 shots for the
Bisons.
"We've
grown up playing together," said Scott. "So we just kind
of know how the other plays, where to play the balls together and
together we're a really good combo."
Near
the 25-minute mark, Miskimmin sent a low cross through the crease
that went untouched. The Pandas keeper Caitlin Schmidt and defender
Lisa Annicchiarico, along with the Bisons Scott, were all unable to
control the dangerous ball.
Manitoba
continued to pressure, with Carrie
Nash managing to get a strong shot off from the top of the box
at the 34-minute mark. Schmidt was able to make the save, but not
control the ball. It nearly squirted free to Miskimmin, but Schmidt
jumped on the ball before a second shot could get off. Four minutes
later, the Bisons again tested Schmidt as Miskimmin streaked in from
the right side and let go a screaming shot that Schmidt had to go
horizontal to grab. The first half shots were 12-2 in favour of Manitoba,
but the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes of play.
Manitoba's
first goal did not come until five minutes into the second half with
the dangerous duo of Scott and Miskimmin connecting for the score.
Miskimmin broke in towards the goal on the right side, stopped and
passed back to Scott who was coming down the middle. She hammered
it into the net for her fourth goal of the year to make the score
1-0 for Manitoba.
Only
three minutes later, Miskimmin found the back of the net for her fifth
of the season. Again, streaking in from the right side, Miskimmin
dodged Schmidt as she came out of the net to challenge her, and then
deposited the ball into the empty net.
The
Pandas got on the board at the 67-minute mark. Mayer put in a corner
kick from Christina Lee to trim the lead to one.
Colpitts
scored her goal in nearly the same fashion as Miskimmin's, except
that she approached the net from the left side. Her seventh of the
season made the score 3-1 at the 70 minute mark.
At
the 74 minute mark Kruper scored the Pandas second goal on a direct
kick by Lauren Kruper. She lined up to the right of Bisons keeper
Ashley
Forbes and drifted a shot over the heads of everyone and into
the back of the net.
The
Bisons will be back in action Sunday when they square off against
the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (2-4-2). Game time is scheduled
for 12 p.m. at University Stadium. The Pandas will travel to Regina
to take on the Rams (0-7-1).
