27 - Karli
Colpitts had a goal and an assist to lead the No. 8-ranked University
of Manitoba Bisons to a 2-0 victory over the hometown Regina Cougars
on Saturday afternoon at the U of R Field.
Colpitts’
tenacity led to the first goal of the game for Manitoba (9-4-0). She
forced a turnover deep in Cougars territory, then sent Desiree
Scott on a breakaway. Scott made no mistake, sliding the ball
past Regina goalie Alyssa Stoeck to notch her sixth goal of the season
in the 33rd minute.
The
Bisons extended their lead just before halftime. In the 44th minute,
Colpitts took a pass from Jolyn
Kwong a couple yards beyond the 18-yard box and rifled a shot
that picked the left corner for her ninth goal of the season.
The
Cougars (0-11-2) had a few golden opportunities to get on the scoreboard.
Rookie forward Michelle Anderson could have given Regina a 1-0 lead,
but Manitoba keeper Ashley
Forbes nullified her breakaway opportunity. In
the 90th minute, Nakia Forsberg tore down the left side and unleashed
a left-footed shot that missed by mere inches.
Forbes
made three saves to record her fourth shutout of the season for the
Bisons. Stoeck made four saves for the Cougars, who were outshot by
a 19-7 margin during the match.
Manitoba
and Regina will meet again on Sunday afternoon at the U of R Field.
Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will be the final regular season
match of the year for both teams.
