19 - It was a different Bison team that took to the court tonight
in men's volleyball action as they knocked off the UBC Thunderbirds
3-1.
Set
one looked to be like a tie match for the entire set, but the Bisons
eventually gained the momentum and bounced the Tbirds 25-20. In
this set the Bisons played well at the net and seemed to make every
key play and attack to go up one nothing on the evening.
In second set action, the Bisons jump to a 4-0 lead and added to
the lead with a service ace on the next play. Manitoba continued
to play a picture perfect game and went into the second technical
time out with a 16-12 lead. The Thunderbirds were unable to gain
any ground on the Bisons, and the Herd took the set 25-19.
Set
three was a bit of a disappointment for the Herd as they led the
entire set until point 17. The Herd managed to keep it close, but
the Thunderbirds ended up squeaking out a 25-22 win.
The
final set of the evening saw the Bisons jump to an early lead, but
watched as the Tbirds come back to tie at 5. The Herd led into the
first time out 8-5. The set continued to be a close contest as the
two teams battled back and forth to the second technical time out
with the Bisons ahead 16-12. After the break, the Herd rumbled back
onto the court with a vengeance and hit every attack and made every
stuff block needed, to take the fourth and final set 25-22.
The
player of note for the Bisons is Matt Balchin with 41 attacks, 18
kills and 11 digs.
The
player of note for the Thunderbirds is Dave Beleznay with 43 attacks,
18 kills and 10 digs.
Game
three will be tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 20) at 7 p.m. at the Investors
Group Athletic Centre.
