18 - In a thrilling five sets the Unversity of Manitoba Bisons defeated
the The Unversity of Winnipeg Wesmen (21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 27-25,
17-15.
Both
teams came out with fierce intensity in the first set, but the Wesmen
came out on top winning the first two sets 25-21.
The
Bisons did not give up in the third winning the set 25-20.
In
the fourth set the Bisons were treading on their last life line
with a point for point set. The Bisons managed to hang on a win
the set 27-25 forcing the Wesmen to a fifth and deciding set. After
coming back from a 2-0 deficit the Bisons had the momentem and intensity
with them. In the fifth the Wesmen were up by two at 8 points when
they switched sides, but the Bisons played tough and tied it up.
At 14-13 Bisons, Toon
van Lankvelt had the Match point serve, and served it into the
net causing the game to be tied, and giving the serve back to the
Wesmen. Tied at 14 the Wesmen got the point. Putting them in match
point siuation. The Bisons persevered and got the side out and Josh
Klassen was on the service line for Manitoba. Klassen served
to consecutive points for the Match win.
Both
teams had outstanding defensive play with 40 digs by the Wesmen
and 37 by the Bisons. Josh Klassen had 19 kills, 1 service ace and
6 defensive digs. Drew
Venables had 50 assists on the night. Ben Schellenberg had 18
kills for the Wesmen and Dustin Addison-Schidneider had 47 assits
for the Wesmen.
This
is the 8th consecutive Duckworth Challenge win for the Herd and
improves their Duckworth Challenge record to 13-2.
The Duckworth Challenge player of the Game for the Bisons was Captian
Jeff
Zylstra and Jarrod Small for the Wesmen.
This
victory for the Bisons improves them to 7-5 in Can West play and
brings the Wesmen record to 7-6.
The
#4 ranked Bisons take on the #3 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies this
weekend at Investors group Athletic Center on Saturday and Sunday.
