February
10 - The University of Manitoba Bisons took three straight sets
from the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack tonight in an hour
and 15 minutes of play.
The
first set saw the ‘Pack and the Bisons inch up the scoreboard with
a three-point margin at most, until the WolfPack got stuck at 17
points while the Bisons brought the score up to 22 before the WolfPack
made another point. 19 points was as high as the ‘Pack went in the
set, though: the final set score was 19-25 for the Bisons.
The
Bisons took an immediate strong lead in the second set, which saw
lots of service errors on both sides and some strong, long volleys.
When it seemed the set was almost over, the WolfPack held the Bisons
to 24 points and climbed up from 14 to 19 points. A final Bison
kill brought the final set score to 19-25 for the Bisons.
The WolfPack led at one point in the third set, the only time the
team led throughout the match. The Bisons kept up the pressure and
led by about six points throughout the set, which ended with a 19-25
score for the Bisons.
“We
need to take the initiative,” said WolfPack head coach Patrick Hennelly.
“Manitoba was looking past us. We need to sustain good play.”
The
teams meet again tomorrow at TRU at 3:00 pm after a brief ceremony
honouring the efforts on behalf of TRU Athletics by retiring VP
Student Services Neil Russell.
