4 - In the first set, the Bisons had a slim 8-6 lead into the first
official timeout. Both teams showed quickly why they were seeded
second and third in the Championships as there was several side
outs and back-and-forth points. Manitoba took a 12-9 lead on a strong
triple block but then Trinity Western rallied and led 16-13 at the
second timeout. TWU rattled off three more consecutive points to
lead 20-14, which led to a Bisons timeout. The Bisons continued
to play strong at the net but could not overcome the deficit and
Trinity Western won the first set by a 25-20 score.
In the second set, Manitoba had an 8-6 early lead but Trinity took
a 16-14 lead into the final nine points. After TWU were up 22-20,
Manitoba received big kills from Toon
van Lankvelt and Josh
Klassen. With a service error and a wide spike by TWU, the Bisons
took the second set by a 26-24 margin.
The
third set had the Herd run off to an 11-7 lead with consecutive
kills by setter Drew
Venables that took TWU off guard. After a rally by TWU with
service aces to close the lead to one, Manitoba jumped back with
six consecutive points from service error by the Spartans and a
couple of big blocks to lead 21-13. A couple more TWU service error
and the Bisons had a 25- 21 set win.
The
fourth set was crucial as the Bisons continued to grow with confidence
and had an early 5-2 and then 11-7 lead. At the second timeout,
the Bisons lead 16- 12 and increased the advantage to 19-14 with
a Klassen spike. After three straight points by Trinity and a Bison
timeout, the Herd had a 19-17 lead. The Spartans landed two cross
court kills on the line for their first lead of the set at 21-20
and rattled off three more points for a 23-21 margin. Manitoba rallied
but came up short in a 25-23 set loss.
The
fifth and deciding set was tied at four before TWU grew from their
momentum of the fourth set win and capitalize on a net infraction
and service error to lead 8-6 at the turn. Trinity had a service
error and big cross-court kill to increase the lead to three points.
After a wide Bisons kill and a TWU kill, the Spartans lead 14-8.
The Bisons did not quit as they forced a TWU kill error and received
a huge block by Nathan Toews before a service error ended the match
at 15-11.
The
Player of the Game for Manitoba was Drew Venables with 7 kills,
13 digs and 45 assists.
The
Bisons will now play in the bronze medal match for the third consecutive
year and will try to win the program's fourth bronze finish since
the 1981-82 season.
