November
18 - Make it 118-0 for the University of Manitoba Bisons mens volleyball
team against Regina when Garth
Pischke is coaching the squad.
The Bisons (3-2) continued their 26-year rule over the University
of Regina Cougars (0-6) and bumped their season record up over .500
with their second straight 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-15) win Saturday
night at Investors Group Athletic Centre.
Toon
van Lankvelt and Jeff
Zylstra led the ‘Zoons with seven kills apiece, with Matt Balchin
(6) hot on their heels. van Lenkvelt also led the squad with seven
digs, while now-starting setter Drew
Venables managed 21 assists.
van
Lankvelt and five-kill power Josh
Klassen got the Bisons into it early on, getting a string on
non-stop points and capitalizing on nearly all the Cougars’ errors.
The Herd was solid on both ends of the game and unbeatable defence
of van Lankvelt, Venables and Nathan
Toews shut down the Regina offence and held the visitors to
only 14 points in the first set.
Manitoba’s
hitting and blocking continued at top-shape in the second and the
score bred hometown intensity. Regina was held to only 19 in the
second and 15 in the third, while Manitoba bolstered its kills total
to 33 and 16 blocks.
The Bisons see their next action on the road against the University
of Calgary Dinos next Friday and Saturday.
