25 - After a huge five set victory last night, the University of
Calgary Dinos set out for another win against the No.5 ranked University
of Manitoba Bisons, but go home with a split, losing 3-1 (23-25,
25-23, 23-252, 22-25) tonight.
Manitoba
power hitter, Josh
Klassen (5th Year) dominated at the net all night, finishing
with an impressive 23 kills on only 33 sets. Whether he was hitting
from the front or the back row, Klassen found a way to score.
Fifth
year veteran, Toon
van Lankvelt, came alongside his Klassen with 16 kills of his
own, leading the Bisons to a victory in the first set, 25-23.
The
Dinos traded off points with the Bisons for the entire second set,
but it wasn’t until 20-20 that the tables turned in favor of Calgary
when Glen Handley stuff blocked Manitoba sensation Josh Klassen,
edging the Dinos ahead 21-20. This was followed up by a kill from
middle blocker David Egan and Colin Poon subbed in to score an ace
serve, tying the game at 1-1.
Bisons
leapt out to a 2-0 lead in the third set. Two missed serves in a
row put the Dinos within two points at 8-6, but a three point run
for the Bison widened the gap in this third set. At 19-14 for the
Bison, Calgary put power hitter Ryan Lenz back on the court and
he instantly made an impact, contributing two kills in a row, bringing
the game to 20-18. Despite two missed serves in the last five points
of the set, the Bisons were able to close out a 25-23 victory in
the third finding a seam in the Dino block.
Calgary
opened the fourth set with a triple block on a back row attack from
Klassen, and followed this up with another block from Glen Handley.
The Bisons responded with three blocks of their own making it a
9-6 score. At 20-16 in favor of the Bisons, Dinos libero Ryan Poon
keeps the ball alive with stellar defense and brings Calgary within
three points of the Bisons. Three missed serves in a row with a
score of 22-19 allowed the Dinos to gain some momentum, but Josh
Klassen finished the fourth set the way the evening began, killing
his 23rd ball of the night.
