November
9 - The men’s volleyball team (0-3-0) were defeated by the
#4-ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (3-2-0) Friday
night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre, dropping the first
game of a weekend series (20-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17).
The
Bisons were seeking their first conference victory of the season
after losing two hard fought matches to the defending CIS champion
University of Winnipeg Wesmen last weekend.
The
first set belonged to the Bisons as Derek Tyler and Captain Drew
Venables led the hungry Bisons to an opening 25-20 win. Drew Venables
finished the set off with a resounding block as the Bisons took
the early lead.
UBC
responded quickly in the next frame as they erupted with a dominant
power attack. Right side Andrew Bonner paced the visitors to an
impressive 25-18 win, as the Bisons rallied late to make it competitive.
The
third set teeter-tottered back and forth with each team exchanging
pleasantries, but the Thunderbirds pulled ahead midway through the
set as power hitter Michael Proudfoot and Matt LeBourdais powered
UBC to the resounding 25-16 set victory.
The
Bisons battled hard in the fifth set but were eventually overcome
by the high-octane Thunderbirds, 25-17.
The
top Bisons were Ryan Munt, John Galloway and Derek Tyler who led
the team with 8 kills each.
The
Bisons look to avenge their loss Saturday night when they host the
UBC Thunderbirds at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. First serve
is at 8:00 p.m.
