16 - The University of Manitoba Bisons recorded their first win
of the 2007-08 season on Friday night after defeating the Regina
Cougars 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-14) in a Canada West men’s volleyball
game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The
first set was closely contested right up until the latter stages
when Manitoba strung together six consecutive points to win by a
25-21 count after being down by one point. The second and third
sets were won handily by the visiting Bisons.
The
Bisons hit for a .397 percentage during the game, including a blistering
.571 in the third set alone. Stefan Bouw had a match-high 12 kills
to lead Manitoba, while setter Drew Venables had 30 assists, six
digs, and two solo blocks. John Galloway had 10 kills for the Bisons
and hit at a .421 clip, while Ryan Munt had eight kills, a .583
hitting percentage, and his six digs tied Venables and Regina’s
Chris Knoop for a match high.
For
the Cougars, Mathew Brooks had a team-high 10 kills and added three
digs and an assisted block. Ryan DeCosse had 27 assists.
Manitoba
improves to 1-4 on the season with the win. Regina falls to 1-4.
The
two teams will square off again on Saturday night at the CKHS. Match
time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
