November
23 - Coming off a weekend sweep of Regina for their first two wins
on the season, the Bisons (2-5) were looking to make it three straight
on the visiting Calgary Dinos at the Investors Group Athletic Centre
on Friday night.
The
Dinos (2-3) were looking shaky out of the blocks, having only won
once in four tries to begin their CIS season. Unfortunately, the
Bisons couldn’t make it three, as the Dinos beat Manitoba 3-1 (25-17,
25-23, 34-36, 25-23).
The
first set was deadlocked in the early going with the two teams trading
points. With the score 16-11 for the Dinos, at the second technical,
frustration was evident on the Bison bench. The Dinos took the first
set 25-15.
The
Dinos picked up in the second, right where they left off in the
first. Taking it to the Herd early, the Dinos’ momentum began to
slow down midway through the set, and Manitoba was able to tie the
game at 13, and eventually take the lead with a huge kill from setter,
Ryan Munt. By the second technical, the Dinos had regained the lead
at 18-14. Calgary eventually took set number 25-23.
The
third set was a lot like the first set because the two teams were
deadlocked in the early going. At the first timeout, Calgary was
ahead by three with an 8-5 score. Again, the calls weren’t falling
in favor of the Herd, and after the second technical, Calgary was
ahead 18-15. In a hard fought set for the Herd, they took it right
down to the wire for the 36-34 set victory.
The
Dinos again took the lead early in the fourth frame, setting the
tone, and forcing the Bisons to battle back for much of the set.
Late in the set, the two teams were trading points back and forth
yet again. The Dinos took the set 25-23, and the game in four sets.
The
Dinos’ Pierre Rocque had an 28 kills and 59 assists total, while
John Galloway was the top Bison with 22 kills.
The next game in this series goes Saturday November 24, at the Investors
Group Athletic Centre. The game will begin at 8 p.m.
