11 - The University of Regina's women's volleyball team suffered
a 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 14-25, 25-21, 15-12) defeat to the Manitoba
Bisons on Sunday afternoon at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health
& Sport.
After
dropping the opening set by a 25-20 score, the Cougars picked it
up in the second and third sets, winning them by scores of 25-22
and 25-14 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. In the third set, Regina
found itself down 8-7, but scored 17 of the next 20 points.
For the victorious Bisons, Ashley
Voth led the team offensively with 15 kills and a .282 hitting
percentage. Voth added 15 digs to record one of three Manitoba double-doubles
in the match. The other two were earned by Katie
Davidson (45 assists, 13 digs) and Sabrina
Barnes (13 kills, 19 digs).
Beth
Clark became the first Cougar this season to register at least 10
blocks. Clark had one solo block and nine block assists, and also
had 12 kills to put up the double-double. Tammy Jule led the Cougars
with a match-high 17 kills and also had an impressive 19 digs. Both
Anne Fleming and libero Kelly Cowan had 23 digs for Regina.
Prior to the game, the Cougars honoured fifth-year players Fleming
and Jennifer Prokopetz. Prokopetz had 44 assists and nine digs in
her final match at the CKHS, while Fleming had eight kills and six
block assists in addition to her 23 digs.
The
win improves the No. 1-ranked Bisons to a Canada West-leading 18-2
this year. Manitoba will now prepare to host the Canada West Final
Four, scheduled for Feb. 23 through 25.
The
Cougars end the season at 8-12 and, for the second consecutive season,
will travel to Langley, B.C. to square off with Trinity Western
in the first round of the playoffs. The Cougars and the Spartans
both won once in two regular-season games against each other this
year. |
