MEET GORDON GIESBRECHT

Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht is a professor of thermophysiology at the University of Manitoba where he studies human responses to exercise in extreme environments. He has spent a career describing how humans respond to hypothermia and helped develop strategies and protocols for pre-hospital treatment of cold patients.

Otherwise known as “Professor Popsicle”, Gordon has applied much of his research in learning how to cope with extreme weather for long periods. His first research expedition on Lake Winnipeg (jokingly called THE ALMOST-SCOTT EXPEDITION) in 1996 took place in the middle of the coldest 19-day period in Manitoba history when the average temperature (-32C) was the same as it was at the North Pole.

This was followed up by a 14-day solo expedition in 1997 and the recent MILLION STEPS EXPEDITION in 2001 which was a joint effort with the University of Manitoba, the Winnipeg School Division, the Canadian Military and U.S. Special Forces.

The MARATHONS ON ICE promises to provide new challenges and push Dr. Giesbrecht’s limits further than ever before.
