WINNIPEG GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY
Winnipeg Section of the geological Association of Canada
Updated: November, 2006
Members of the Winnipeg Section are involved in public awareness of the geosciences. Each year members of the
association promote the geosciences in cooperation with the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Manitoba and the Manitoba Geological Survey as well as other geoscience organizations.
- School Visits
One of the most active areas for the members is school visits. Many students from grades 3 to 12
in the Winnipeg area have partaken in our geoscience awareness program. Topics have varied from rocks and minerals
to plate tectonics and earthquakes. Volunteers go to schools to discuss geoscience with students or the students
visit the Department of Geological Sciences
- Career Days
Members of GAC have partcipated in four career days at local high schools. We have set up a booth or made
presentations at these career days.
- Curriculum Development
Members of the local were active committe members in the development of the Manitoba position on
Earth and Space Sciences in the Pan Canadian Protocol.
- Science in the Schools
In 199-2000 in cooperation with Glenlawn Collegiate and the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Manitoba
members engaged in an active research program incorporating grade 11 and 12 chemistry students. The students became familiar with different analytical methods such as clay mineral analysis using
XRD techniques and texturals studies using the SEM, gephysics, mapping, bulk sample,
mineral, and water chemistry.
- Engineering and Geoscience Week
Each year members particpate in an Engineering and Science Week display in Winnipeg.
