Celebrating Our Graduates’ Contribution to Manitoba and Canada
This site pays tribute to some of the University of Manitoba’s most influential and highest achieving alumni. It highlights more than 200 known graduates who have received the Order of Canada and/or the Order of Manitoba, the most prestigious honours in our country and our province.
The biographies were written with the cooperation of living graduates. In the case of deceased individuals, biographies were drawn with permission from the website of the Governor General, the Dictionary of Manitoba Biography by J.M. Bumsted (University of Manitoba Press, 1999) and other sources.
The Order of Canada, established in 1967, is Canada’s highest honour for lifetime achievement. The award is given at three levels—Companion, Officer and Member—with respect to the scope of the individual’s accomplishments. Each year, a limited number of appointments can be made by the Governor General, including 15 appointments of the Companion of the Order of Canada, 64 appointments of the Officer of the Order of Canada and 136 appointments of the Member of the Order of Canada.
Since the inception of the Order of Canada, 17 University of Manitoba graduates have been appointed as Companions, 80 as Officers and 102 as Members.
The Order of Manitoba, established in 1999, is the highest honour awarded to citizens or long-time residents of Manitoba. The award recognizes “individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field of endeavour benefiting in an outstanding manner the social, cultural or economic well-being of Manitoba and its residents.” To date, 73 individuals have been appointed to the Order of Manitoba, 36 of whom are University of Manitoba alumni.
