MASTER OF LAWS (LL.M.)

The University of Manitoba offers a thesis based LLM research program which attracts candidates from around the world. Students participate in a rich scholarly environment, conducting research in a wider range of areas including human rights, crime and society, international law and private enterprise.

Requirements


The Master of Laws (LL.M.) is an advanced thesis-based degree designed for completion within one calendar year. There is a residency requirement of two terms, September to May.

In addition to the thesis, the candidate will successfully complete three courses at the University of Manitoba within the year of residency.

Applications and all supporting material should be received by January 15. Please note that applications made after this date can not be considered for the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship. Applications will be reviewed on a continuing basis and early offers will be made. Applications received after March 15 will not be considered.

Admission Requirements

The applicant must hold the degree of Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor or the equivalent civil law degree or other comparable degree in law.

The applicant must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 (B+ or upper second class standing) or better.

Applicants from non-English speaking countries must demonstrate English language proficiency of 600 or better on the TOEFL score. Applicants also may be required to demonstrate proficiency based on other tests including submission of written work.

The applicant will be assigned an advisor with expertise in the proposed area of research. If no such advisor is available, the application cannot be accepted and the applicant may be referred elsewhere.

Application Requirements

 

The application form, application fee, and all supporting materials as described below should be sent to the Graduate Studies Program, Faculty of Law, at the address above.


1 Application Form   The University of Manitoba Faculty of Graduate Studies Application for Admission form is available on the University of Manitoba Faculty of Graduate Studies web site.
  
2 Transcripts Original transcripts, not photocopies, of all studies at the university level including proof of receipt of a Bachelor of Laws or equivalent first degree in law, are required. 
3 Letters of recommendation Three letters of recommendation are required. Two letters must be from university teachers familiar with the applicant's achievements and strengths. The third may be from an employer in a law-related area.  
4 Thesis statement   The thesis statement consists of one or two pages setting out the applicant's proposed thesis topic, method and approach, and the scope of the proposed research. This statement should be carefully considered. It is on the basis of this statement that the advisor is assigned or the application is rejected.
5 Curriculum vitae   A copy of the applicant's curriculum vitae (professional resume) must be included.
6 Other supporting materials

The applicant is advised to submit other materials relevant to the application including, for example, copies of the applicant's publications, research papers and professional reports.

Canadian/Permanent Resident Applicants:
CA$75.00 (Seventy Five Canadian dollars).

International Applicants:
CA$90.00 (Ninety Canadian dollars).

Program Requirements

1. Residency

The candidate must attend the University of Manitoba on a full-time basis for one academic year, September to May, in the year of admission, during which time all course work should be completed..

2. Advisor

The candidate is assigned a faculty advisor with expertise in the chosen area of study. The advisor will direct the candidate's thesis design, approach and research, advise on course selection, be available for regular consultation and oversee the production of the thesis.

The candidate is advised to make early and regular contact with the faculty advisor. The relationship between advisor and candidate is central to the graduate program and to the successful completion of the LL.M. degree.

3. External reader

The candidate is assigned an external reader with expertise in the field who will evaluate and report on the thesis. When the report of the external reader is received, the advisor and candidate together will discuss revisions to the thesis.

4. Course work

The candidate will successfully complete the seminar course Graduate Legal Research and Theory and two additional courses relevant to the thesis area. One of these courses must be taken in the Faculty of Law.

Course selection must be approved by the advisor and Director, and should not exceed six class hours per term. A grade of B or better in each course is required.

5. Thesis

The candidate will submit to the Faculty of Graduate Studies a thesis of some 90 to 120 pages within one year of the date of registration, and no later than eight weeks before the date of anticipated graduation.

Please note that, prior to this deadline, six weeks must be allowed for the external review of the thesis and for revisions based on the external reader's report.

With the approval of the advisor, the candidate may receive an extension of one year for thesis completion.

Only on special application to the Faculty of Law Graduate Studies Committee, and under extenuating circumstances, will the completion date be further extended.

Fellowships and financial support

The Faculty of Law offers the Dickson, Kristjiansson and Freedman Fellowships, and other fellowships as may from time to time be announced. Please contact the Graduate Studies Program, Faculty of Law for current fellowship information.

The Dickson Fellowship is awarded, in order of preference, to a candidate of Aboriginal descent, or a candidate studying Aboriginal issues, or a candidate studying Canadian constitutional and human rights law under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The University of Manitoba Faculty of Graduate Studies offers the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF). Competition for this fellowship is on a University-wide basis. Please see the University of Manitoba Faculty of Graduate Studies web site.

Practice
