Biography of Barry Broadfoot

Barry Broadfoot was born in Winnipeg on January 21, 1926. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1949. While at the University, Broadfoot was the Arts Representative on the UMSU Council and worked in various positions on The Manitoban , including that of editor for 1947-48. Forty-four years after his graduation, in October 1993, Broadfoot was awarded the University of Manitoba Alumni Association's Alumni Jubilee Award for his achievements as a writer and for his contributions to Canadian oral history.

Broadfoot's first career was in the field of journalism. He worked in various journalistic and editorial positions for such newspapers as The Winnipeg Tribune , The Vancouver News Herald , The Edmonton Bulletin and The Vancouver Sun where he worked for seventeen years. In 1972 Broadfoot resigned from The Vancouver Sun and began his successful and lucrative career as a writer began. Broadfoot had become convinced that Canadians, particularly Canadian schoolchildren, were not learning the important facts about Canadian history. The Depression, he maintained, was often relegated to a mere paragraph in high school textbooks and history books did not generally tell the stories of ordinary Canadians. To correct these inadequacies, Broadfoot equipped himself with a tape recorder and a typewriter and began to interview "ordinary people" from across Canada. He transcribed and edited the stories that he collected on tape to create his first book, Ten Lost Years , which was published in 1973. The book met with immediate success and nationwide popularity. Broadfoot continued his work on Canadian oral history ("living memories") and produced six more books on Canadian history and one on the Russian people during the Gorbachev era. In addition, Broadfoot produced a semi-autobiography, My Own Years , which also utilized some of his oral history techniques.

Broadfoot has been described as "one of few Canadians who makes a living from his writings." Broadfoot's books have met with continued success and, through them, Broadfoot has popularized the use of oral sources in recording history. Most of his books have been issued in paperback and, as of 1993, all were still in active print. The books have been used as textbooks and as supplementary reading for secondary school and university courses. Also, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has produced movies based on Ten Lost Years and Six War Years . Ten Lost Years has also been performed as a play.

Barry Broadfoot is married to Lori Wilcock, has two children, Susan and Ross, and currently resides in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Scope and Contents of the Papers

The Broadfoot collection is organized primarily according to his nine published histories: Ten Lost Years (1973); Six War Years (1974); The Pioneer Years (1976); Years of Sorrow, Years of Shame (1977); My Own Years (1983); The Veterans' Years (1985); The Immigrant Years (1986); Next-Year Country (1988) and Ordinary Russians (1989). Contained within these collections are contracts, manuscripts (edited and unedited), rejected stories and photographs relating to the books that were finally produced. Signed copies of the books are provided for all but Six War Years . Newspaper and magazine reviews have been included for most of the books. There are also two unpublished manuscripts and a number of essays on such topics as the writing of oral history and the publishing industry in Canada. Broadfoot carefully organized his papers and included descriptions and explanations of most of his papers.

An important aspect of the collection is the correspondence that Broadfoot received when he solicited the assistance of Canadians in the writing of two of his books: The Veterans' Years (1985) and The Immigrant Years (1986). The files of correspondence (seven for The Veterans' Years and three for The Immigrant Years ) include, respectively, stories from men and women detailing their personal experiences in the Second World War and their return to Canada; and stories of families and individuals who immigrated to Canada in the post-war era and their adjustment to Canadian life.

A conspicuous absence in Broadfoot's collection is his taped interviews. Broadfoot did not save his tapes and, thus, the actual reminiscences are not available to the researcher. As well, Broadfoot corresponded for twelve years with Canadian author, Margaret Laurence. According to Broadfoot, Laurence kept all of his letters. However, Broadfoot destroyed all of Laurence's letters to him.
