Biography of Anton and Patty Kirk

Anton “Tony” Kirk was born on October 21, 1914, in Winnipeg. His Ukrainian parents immigrated to Canada in 1901. His father Dmytro Kryvoruchka officially changed his name to Kirk to make his name shorter and easy to apply for a job. as many Ukrainians faced discrimination in Canada, in the 1930's.

While attending a high school, Anton Kirk developed a love for music. Encouraged by his brother William (Bill), he joined the Royal Canadian Legion Band as a trumpet player. Anton Kirk played for the band until 1956. He was also a member of Local 190, Winnipeg Musicians Association, for over 50 years.

During the WWII Anton joined the Canadian Navy and served in the South Pacific on the H.M.C.S. Uganda. The Uganda was sent to Halifax for training exercises and then cruised around Europe. The Uganda participated in the attacks on Japan at Kobe Naval Base in 1945. After the surrender of Japan, the ship was sent back to Canada.

When Anton returned from the war, Anton married his childhood sweetheart, Patty Zarosinski, a teacher with the Winnipeg School Division and they lived a modest life in Winnipeg’s North End. Anton worked as an accountant for CNR and retired in 1974. He passed away on August 3, 2008.

Patty Kirk (nee Zarosinski) was born on February 13, 1916 in Winnipeg. She graduated from Normal School and received her BA in 1959; B. Ed in 1960, and M.Ed. in 1965. Patty was involved in the Alumni Association and served on a university Senate Committee. As a teacher, Patty worked primary with children with reading and learning disabilities. Patty died at the age of 79 in 1995.

Anton and Patty both loved the art. They financially supported many art organizations in Winnipeg such as the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Manitoba Opera Association, the Manitoba Theatre Centre, the Prairie Theatre Exchange and many more. They also created many endowments funds for education and library services at the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, such as Patty Kirk Memorial Endowment Funds and William “Bill” Kirk Scholarship in Music (University of Manitoba); Patty Kirk Scholarship in Education (University of Winnipeg) . Anton Kirk also volunteered at the Winnipeg Music Festival, Dalnavert Museum, Fred Douglas Lodge, Ukrainian churches and Oseredok (Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre). On Remembrance Day, Anton Kirk educated children about the role Canadian veterans played in the WWII. Many organizations and institutions gained from Anton and Patty Kirk’s generous contributions. In 1998 Anton Kirk was honored by the City of Winnipeg, as the Philanthropist of the year, and in 2002 Anton Kirk received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal.
