Biography of Halyna and John Muchin

John Serge Muchin was born on November 25, 1920 in Odesa, Ukraine. In Ukraine, he graduated from the Pervomaisk Pedagogic Institute (1939) and from the Moscow Artillery College (1941). In Canada, he completed his BLS in Ottawa (1962) and MA in the Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba (1972). John Muchin received his Canadian citizenship in 1956. He moved to Winnipeg from Ottawa in 1963 and became a librarian for J. Richardson & Sons firm in Winnipeg. One year later in 1964, he got a position of a Slavic Librarian and cataloguer at the University of Manitoba, replacing Otto Bruer (1962-1964). As a Slavic Librarian and Slavic cataloguer, he increased collection volume from 5000 in 1964 to 56 000 in 1990. In 1968, he became a head of the Special Collection Department at the University of Manitoba and held that post until 1990. His biggest contribution to the Slavic Collection, is compiling a card catalogue of all Ukrainian books published in Canada. His Canadiana catalogue is held in the Archives and Special Collections, University of Manitoba. John Muchin published two books “Za viru batkiv uniiaty v khudozhestve Korolenka” (1976) and “Slavic Collection of the University of Manitoba” (1970). He was a member of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Science (UVAN), Manitoba Library Association, and the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre. John Muchin passed away on June 19, 2013 in King City, Ontario.

Halyna Muchin (nee Ianchyk) was born on April 11, 1930 in Kolky (Volyn), Ukraine. Her family came to Canada after the Second World War. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with BA (1978) and MA (1980). She was awarded the Izaak Walton Killam Pre-doctoral Scholarship, 1980, 1981, 1982 and further pursued her education by completing her PhD. in Philosophy at the University of Alberta (1987). Halyna worked as a journalist for Canadian Farmer “Kanadiis’kyi farmer” (1957-1963); New Path “Novyi shliakh” (1963-64, 1966); and Ukrainian Voice “Ukrains’kyi holos”. She also contributed to the Ukrainian Canadian First Congress publication with her article “Violation of Human Rights in Ukraine”. Halyna Muchin published several articles and books on Ukrainian Literature: “Populism and Modernism in Ukrainian Literature 1860 – 1920” (1978) and “The Evolution of the Ukrainian Family and its Portrayal in Illia Kyriiak’s Novel Sons of the Soil” (1978). She belongs to many Ukrainian organizations such as the Ukrainian Women Association; Ukrainian Canadian Congress (KUK). Halyna Muchin was also a director of the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre (Oseredok) in 1971. She is married to John Muchin.
