"Jane Atkinson" is a work in progress and the electronic text provided here is faithful to the draft held in the FPG Collections in Archives and Special Collections. As such it preserves errors and odd features that either Grove or an editor would probably have corrected or altered if it had been published.

Unusual features of the manuscript that we have not changed are:

• Grove's use of foreign or archaic words [e.g. lustrum, vesta, iodoform, repp, pudicity, etc.]

• Grove's unconventional orthography [e.g. bazar for bazaar, pallour for pallor; boor for Boer]

• Grove's at times awkward constructions [ e.g. "There was something else which he avoided to think of."]

• Grove's unusual use of capitalization [e.g. red cross, boor war, Albert avenue, etc.]

• and his occasional grammatical errors [ e.g. "In spite of her pregnancy she felt more and more virgin." or "Remained business. He could drown himself in that."]

The manuscript presented challenges for transciption as there are many additions, deletions, and corrections marked on it. For that reason we created two versions, one which incorporates all the changes Grove marked on his manuscript and another which shows deletions, additions and corrections except in those instances where corrections were made to minor typographic errors in most cases usually involving one letter or character.

These changes are designated in the text as follows:

deletions
in square brackets, with red text and with an overstrike through the text: ie. [ profoundly ]
additions
in square brackets, with green text. ie. [while]
corrections

in square brackets, with author's corrected text indicated in green text and deleted text in red with an overstrike through it: ie. [ time ] [ while]
unclear

in one or two instances where the word deleted was indecipherable, the text deleted is indicated as unclear: ie. [unclear]
