Title: Turnstone Press fonds.

Dates: 1976-2006.

Extent: 28.5 m of textual records and other material.

Administrative history: Turnstone Press was founded in Winnipeg in 1975 by Dennis Cooley and Wayne Tefs as a non-profit press to encourage the writing and reading of poetry in western Canada. Among the first artists to have their work published through Turnstone were Robert Kroetsch (Seed Catalogue, 1977), Miriam Waddington (Mister Never, ca. 1978), Ralph Gustafson (Soviet Poems, ca. 1978), and Tom Wayman (A Planet Mostly Sea, 1979). Turnstone Press is supported in part by the Manitoba Arts Council and for years was located at St. John's College on the University of Manitoba campus.

Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Turnstone Press in 1990, 1991, and 2006.

Scope and content: The 1990 and 1991 accessions (A.90-49, A.91-42) consist of correspondence, brochures, sales records, minutes, and financial statements but predominantly consist of poetry submitted for publication by various artists. The poetry is filed alphabetically by the artists' names with related publishing correspondence. There are over 100 artists represented providing an excellent study in Manitoban poetry. Also filed separately are the rejections for 1979 and 1980.  These accessions also feature a photograph and tape collection.

The 2006 accession (A.06-38) consists of literary records (1979-2006) of 250 titles (manuscripts, correspondence, and books). They are arranged in alphabetical order by authors' last names. The fonds also contains correspondence, financial records (1983-1988), rejection letters (1984-1998), and promotional materials (1980s-1990s).
