Biographical Sketch: Henry Kalen was born 20 January 1928 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Kalen received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Manitoba in 1957.  Kalen worked as an architect until 1960 when he changed career paths and enlisted in Art Education at the Illinois Institute of Technology (the "New Bauhaus") to become a professional photographer.  He joined the University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture where in addition to teaching photography, he also assisted in teaching Architectural Drawing, Graphic Presentation and Fundamentals of Design from 1960 to 1971.  He then started his own photography and post-card distribution company.  His stock photographs were used in publications such as Maclean's, Chatelaine, and Canadian Geographic.  His book, Henry Kalen's Winnipeg, was a local best-seller for many years.  Henry Kalen died on 25 December 2004.
