-
LEVEL 1. Freely available on the Statistics Canada 2001 Census website:
no restrictions on access, includes information on Canada, provinces, territories,
Census Metropolitan Areas (CMA), Census Agglomerations, Federal Electoral
Districts, etc.
Census Metropolitan Areas consist of a large urban core with groups of adjacent, largely
urban municipalities (census subdivisions) that have a high degree of social and economic
integration. For example, Winnipeg CMA consists of Winnipeg urban area, plus Richot, Tache,
Springfield, Rosser, etc. See the
Census Geography Overview for more information.
The City of Winnipeg provides access to freely available custom Census data, called the
City of Winnipeg Neighbourhood Profiles.
This site includes only profile data, but it has unique geographies, such as downtown,
inner city, wards, besides the over 200 neighbourhoods with names. Hence, you might
start here if you are looking for information on Spence, West Broadway, Point Douglas, etc.
- LEVEL 2:
Depository Services Program: access is available to any users, including the public,
who are physically within the Libraries, plus remote access for current
faculty, students and staff of the University of Manitoba. The
program provides access to information on Census tracts, Census
divisions, Census subdivisions, etc.
Census tracts are small relatively stable areas of between 2,500 and 8,000 population,
situated within Census Metropolitan Areas. Winnipeg CMA had 165 Census Tracts for the 2001
Census. See the
Census Geography Overview for more information.
Census Divisions are groups of neighbouring municipalities.
Manitoba is divided into 23 Census divisions.
Census Subdivisions are generally municipalities, or an area that is roughly
equivalent, such as an Aboriginal reserve, a town, a village, or an unorganized territory.
Manitoba had 298 subdivisions for the 2001 Census.
See the
Census Geography Overview site for more information.
-
LEVEL 3: Data Liberation Initiative: access is restricted to only current faculty, students
and staff of the University of Manitoba, for non-commercial purposes. Qualified users may
access the data on campus or remotely. Includes Dissmeinaition areas and Forward Sortation Areas.
Dissemination areas are small areas with population between 400 and 700. This may be a couple
of blocks in a city, but also covers rural areas.
Forward Sortation Area is the area covered by the first three digits of a postal code.
