Data Library Services - GIS Resources

This document will assist individuals in locating GIS (Geographic Information Systems) resources at the University of Manitoba Libraries.
GIS resources include: datasets, hardware and software, web resources and books.
Data Library Services, at the University of Manitoba Libraries, disseminates many GIS materials through various agreements, where data is restricted to current students, faculty and staff, for educational and research purposes.

Products received by Elizabeth Dafoe Library, through the Government Documents Department, are available to the public, but only to walk-in users within this library.
Selected web sites provide unrestricted access to GIS data.

GIS DATASETS IN THE LIBRARIES COLLECTION:

Report on GIS and Remote Sensing Resources at the University of Manitoba Libraries, March 18, 2004. (Word format 157 kb)
ArcView software includes basic data with the installation (see directory .../esri/esridata/). This generally includes basic political boundaries, cities, rivers, lakes, etc. for Canada, Europe, Mexico, USA, and the World.
Statistics Canada spacial files are available, including: Digital boundary files, Digital cartographic files, Street network files, Block face data files, etc.
The Land Information Navigator set, produced by Linnet Geomatics, incluces an orthophoto set of cd-roms for south half of Manitoba, plus miscellaneous data sets. It is located in Elizabeth Dafoe Library Reserve (Dafoe Reserve G 1156 A4 L35).
DMTI Spatial software and data.
ArcCanada (version 3.0).
Natural Resources Canada spatial data is now freely available from their website.

Other provincial data, on cd-roms, are kept in Elizabeth Dafoe Library Reserve:

Compilation of Geoscience information for the Leaf Rapids area (Dafoe Reserve: GovDocs Can6 Man1 M51.8 M57 99-1 CD-ROM);
Geology, magnetic and gravity maps of Manitoba (Dafoe Reserve: GovDocs Can6 Man1 M51.8 Op46 no.99-12 CD-ROM).
Global GIS database 7 cdroms set (Dafoe Reserve: G 1021 G56 v.62A 2003=Central and South America, v.62B=Africa, v.62C=South Asia, v.62D=South Pacific, v.62E=North Eurasia, v.62F=North America, and v.62G=Europe) For more information, see the American Geological Institute web site.
Natural Earth: free vector and raster map data at 1:10m, 1:50m, and 1:110m scales

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE:

Elizabeth Dafoe Library has a GIS workstation with a Pentium computer, twenty inch monitor, network connection to a printer (10 cents a page, colour one dollar a page). This workstation has ArcView 3.2 installed on it.
Large Format Digital Scanning Service is now available at Elizabeth Dafoe Library.
Regular size scanners are available in the computer labs in Elizabeth Dafoe Library.
Computer lab workstations in Dafoe have ArcView 3.2 and Google Earth

GIS BOOKS AND JOURNALS
